Buschman Street Cafe

About Us

Buschman Street Café was born from a lifelong dream—to create a bistro-style fine dining restaurant where exceptional cuisine and heartfelt service come together to form unforgettable experiences. Nestled in the heart of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the café is the realization of owner Terry Jordan’s passion for hospitality and his desire to serve guests at the highest level. From the very beginning, Terry envisioned a space that felt both luxurious and inviting, where every detail mattered and every guest felt genuinely cared for.

Terry built his career from the ground up, spending more than 40 years in the service industry and working every position along the way to truly understand what it means to create an exceptional dining experience. That hands-on journey shaped his philosophy: food should inspire, service should feel effortless, and guests should always come first. Buschman Street Café reflects the culmination of those lessons, blending refined technique, elevated flavors, and thoughtful presentation into every dish that leaves the kitchen.

The menu features gourmet cuisine, decadent desserts, and a carefully curated selection of wines and cocktails designed to complement each dining experience. Whether joining us for an intimate dinner, a celebratory evening, or one of our signature wine-forward experiences, guests are welcomed into a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere that feels intentionally crafted for connection and enjoyment.

Beyond daily dining, Buschman Street Café has become a sought-after destination for private events and luxury catering, offering the same attention to detail, top-tier service, and culinary excellence in every setting. From elegant celebrations to corporate gatherings, each event is approached with care, precision, and creativity.

At its core, Buschman Street Café is about service. Terry’s commitment to choosing his guests over himself is felt in every interaction, every plate, and every carefully designed moment. The result is an intimate, upscale dining experience where passion, purpose, and hospitality come together—making Buschman Street Café a premier destination for refined dining in Hattiesburg and the surrounding areas.

Our History & Location
Buschman Street Café is proudly located in the historic Newman-Buschman Street neighborhood, one of Hattiesburg’s earliest and most significant areas. The roots of this district trace back to the founding of Hattiesburg itself in 1884, when the city’s boundaries were measured from the railroad depot that fueled its early growth. As the town developed, the area stretching along the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad quickly became a center of activity, industry, and community life.

By the late 1800s, Newman Street—originally known as East Front Street—was already home to dwellings, a commercial hotel, and industrial operations that supported the growing lumber economy. At the eastern end of the district stood the original Wiscasset Lumber Mill, a powerful engine of industry that operated day and night. After the mill burned in 1893, the site was acquired by the J.J. Newman Lumber Company, which began operations in 1895 and would soon play a defining role in Hattiesburg’s expansion.

The Newman Lumber Company helped shape the neighborhood into a fully functioning corporate community. Homes were built for both executives and workers, alongside offices, carpenter shops, blacksmith shops, and machine facilities. Remarkably, the company supplied its own utilities, including electricity, water, and fire protection—an uncommon model at the time and a testament to the area’s importance. While the company’s impact sparked mixed interpretations over time, it undeniably served as a catalyst for the city’s rapid growth and prosperity in the early twentieth century.

The building at 803 Newman Street holds particular historical significance, having been designed for dual purposes as both a residence for the mill manager and a guesthouse for corporate visitors. Nearby once stood the Newman Company’s corporate office, where a massive safe—large enough to shelter a vehicle—remained long after the structure itself was removed, standing as a powerful symbol of the area’s industrial past.

Today, echoes of the neighborhood’s history remain visible in the neo-classical cottages lining Buschman Street, Victorian and Colonial Revival homes along Newman Street, and the preserved 1910 Hattiesburg Depot, now restored as a transportation center and event space. Together, these landmarks form a living reminder of the city’s origins and the community that grew around the railroad.

Buschman Street Café now occupies this historic setting with deep respect for its past. Just as the neighborhood once brought people together through industry and innovation, the café continues that tradition by offering a place of connection, craftsmanship, and hospitality. The history of Newman-Buschman Street is not just a backdrop—it is part of the experience, grounding every meal in a sense of place, purpose, and enduring legacy.

this place is consistently phenomenal. It has become our special event place due to the exceptional food and service we receive every time we visit.. even if it isn't a special occasion- they make every visit feel like one. My favorite thing is the parmesean crusted salmon, which is perfect every time, but the ribeye can't be beat either. Our favorite bartender is Spencer, who takes meticulous care with every drink he crafts- the Lavendiablo is superb ..desserts, like cocktails are curated with love and attention.. you cannot go wrong with any- i recommend getting them all! A visit to Buschman's is second to none and Hattiesburg should feel very fortunate to have it.
